ABOUT

Designated as Gentilly Woods first and only agrotourism establishment, Mamou Fruit & Tea (MFT)  is an urban farm located on several lots that were once blighted due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  While increasing the overall quality of life and decreasing blight in Gentilly Woods, the urban farm serves as a catalyst to decrease food insecurity in a neighborhood that consist of a large population of senior citizens, youth, and a mid to low-income population.  MFT provides a space where visitors can learn more about home-scale agriculture and  local food culture while serving  as an educational and agricultural resource for the surrounding neighborhood.   Lodging accommodations are provided for guests who desire for agricultural education to be a major component of their travel.  Moreover, MFT is located near the following: New Orleans Lakefront Airport, New Orleans Lakefront Arena, French Quarter, Dillard University, SUNO, Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course, New Orleans Fairgrounds, City Park.

MFT's urban farm has developed multiple scales of agricultural projects to teach neighbors and visitors how to begin growing their own food in a way that’s tailored to their lifestyles, budget, and access to space. The three scales chosen are an herb garden, a hydroponic garden, and a fruit orchard. Able to be grown indoors or outdoors, herb gardens are affordable and accessible with a variety of edible, medicinal, and aromatic uses. Hydroponic gardening is a more intensive system than herb gardening, but one that’s easily scalable and adaptable for many different kinds of food.  All of these elements are combine with the goal of offering a comprehensive introduction to home gardening and farming with the intention of making the practice accessible to a wider variety of people typically excluded by their socioeconomic status.
